No White after Labor Day
Jeanice McDade
“And to her was granted that she
should be arrayed in fine linen, clean
and white: for the fine linen is the
righteousness of saints.”
(Revelation 19:8 KJV)
've always heard that it isn't proper to wear white after Labor Day. I'm not sure where this tradition began but, as a Christian, I have to take exception with it.
Of course, I am being tongue in cheek and not sincerely referring to our physical dress but, rather, how we clothe ourselves spiritually.
Most of us know that white symbolizes purity. While we are to obey His commandments, we cannot do that without Christ living through us. We have some "tools" in our "work box" that helps us to love God and yield to Him. His Word is one of these tools. We are told that we should meditate on His Word day and night (Joshua 1:8) and to hide His Word in our heart, so that we don't sin against Him (Psalm 119:10-12).
His Word also tells us that OUR righteousness is as filthy rags to Him (Isaiah 64:4-9) ... our only hope is in Jesus and putting on His robe of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10). So, as we purpose to do what is right in the eyes of God, let us understand that our "works" aren’t what impress God but rather a yielding heart allowing Him to work in and through us. (Romans 4 is a good chapter to read about faith in Christ.)
So, when we think of Labor Day and the traditions of man, let us contemplate our walk with Him and commit fresh and anew to indeed wear white after Labor Day and every day.
Dear Lord, we thank You for the prompt to search our hearts. We know that You have put within us a new heart and made us a new creation for which we are so thankful. Help us to purge all unrighteousness from our lives. Help us yield completely to You. Lord, we want to show our love for You by being obedient to You. Forgive us when we fail. Show us where we can improve and how to avoid pitfalls. We thank You for Your protection, Your love, Your mercy, and Your grace. Thank You for the little reminder that we can and should wear white after Labor Day and always. Thank You for living through us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
